Is the porro prism used on these binoculars? I don't see an mention in the listing.

Yes, this is a porro design. The telltale sign is that the axis of the objectives (front lenses) and of the eyepieces don't line up. Under $100, porros can give more contrast..that is, less haze or glare, richer colors. While roofs are catching up, one thing special to porros is the wide spread up front, and that gives them a much stronger '3D' effect.

We are going to Africa and need 2 pairs of binoculars - it was recommended that we get 8x40 or 10x42 ---- are these equivalent? good for safari????

If you are use to using a pair of binoculars, any binoculars, unless there 30 years old and broken! These are very good. I got a pair of 10x50 and they're too hard to see through unless on a tripod.
