There's a nifty trick you can do with neon bulbs: hold on to one lead of the bulb, and touch the other lead to a wire in your house. If that wire is "live", the bulb will glow, even though there's no circuit that's being completed. This works because your body can store a tiny bit of charge, and that tiny bit of charge will move in/out of your body through the bulb, making it glow. Since you're not completing a circuit -- you're not standing in water or anything, right? -- it can't hurt you.

I used these for a high school physics lab. They are good for demo'ing static discharge from an electrophorus as the current is small but the light is visible in a darkened room. My students loved this part of the lab.

I bought these because of their ability to light up when close to RF or Microwave radiation. It's an inexpensive tool to detect a possible safety hazard.
