Good but complex
Good bit of kit. Provides lots of necessary info and has large characters display for visual feedback with a really useful altitude sensor. However, need to ensure the close proximity between sensor and wheel. It is also not straight forward to use and could be better programmed, more intuitive and less fiddly. However, most of these cycle computers appear to be more complex than they need to be. Generally happy once I got used to it. Bought this and a wireless VDO M3 for my son so we can ride together and although we did the same route there appears to be a marked difference (8%) in the comparison of distance traveled. This may be due partly to the different settings on the size of the wheels but I followed instructions and checked several times.

Excellent replacement for the 1.0
I had a difficult time finding a replacement for my VDO 1.0. I wanted a computer that would give me altitude information including slope. I do not need to know my heart rate or pedaling cadence. The M4 does what I want. It is also very easy to check through different windows for different information and easy to reset altitude at the start of the day. On the whole I like it better than the 1.0 although I kind of wish it kept a total altitude gain for all rides that it is used on, not just the current ride. As far as I could tell, it is not (yet) for sale in the U.S., but ordering it through Amazon from England was quick and easy.

Buy the wired version
In general this is a pretty useful computer with a nice clear display and easy to operate buttons, even with gloves on. It's packed with functions. For touring it's particularly useful as you can store a total 'navigator' distance but still record daily distances. The altitude functions are slightly confusing to set up and the manual isn't much help. The ability to switch it between two bikes and keep track of each is useful so you can swap it between your road bike and mountain bike if you've two mounting kits.It has two problems however in day to day use.1) The battery doesn't last long. I'm getting at most 3 months use. Often just 1 month before the 'computer low' warning appears. The display never switches off. It will go in to a standby mode with the clock on but never off. I've tried different brands of battery. On the plus side, swapping batteries is simple enough and it remembers your settings even with the battery out for 10 seconds or so.2) It's badly affected by other sources of electrical interference. Forget about also mounting a phone on your bars or a decently powered LED light. It'll just flash zero at you and then go to standby.I also have the wired version of the M4. All the functions but neither of these two problems. The battery in my wired version is now 18 months old and it's got thousands of miles on it. IME, if you're ok with wired, buy that version.
