My koi has no eyes!
I picked up one of the random koi fish artisan keycaps from GIKZO, the SA profile R1 version for the escape key. The one I got looks like a little koi swimming in icy water. The resin is clear with a cool blue tone that gives it a frozen, glassy look, and the fish itself is red and white. Unfortunately, my little koi has no eyes, no friends, and it’s floating all by itself in its chilly resin pond. Still, I kind of like it for that. It’s a bit tragic, but endearing. In terms of look and quality, it’s well-made overall. The finish is smooth and clear, and there aren’t any bubbles or blemishes in the resin, just the slightly misplaced fish. The koi sits very close to the top surface, almost pressed against it, which makes it hard to see from side angles. From a top-down view, though, it looks good and the depth effect still works. I just wish the fish were a little bigger or positioned more in the middle of the cap so it could be seen more clearly. The keycap itself is tall. Being SA profile, it’s noticeably higher than Cherry or OEM caps, almost towering next to them. That’s not a flaw, just something to be aware of if you plan to mix profiles, because it’ll definitely stand out on the board. The resin surface is slick to the touch, but since it’s meant for the escape key, that’s not a problem. It feels nice and cool under the finger, and the polish gives it a clean, icy appearance that fits the overall theme. As for lighting, the cap works well with RGB. I tested it on a north-facing LED keyboard, so the light glowed up from behind the fish more than in front, creating a soft underwater effect. I haven’t tried it on a south-facing board yet, but I imagine that might make the koi a bit easier to see. Functionality was perfect. It snapped onto a MX switch with no resistance and came off just as easily, even with a box-style dust guard stem. The stem fit feels secure and well-formed, not loose or overly tight. For $15, I think it’s fair. I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars mainly because of the missing eyes and the placement of the koi being too high in the resin. Otherwise, it’s a nicely made artisan keycap that looks great under light, feels premium enough for the price, and adds a touch of personality to the keyboard, even if my poor little fish can’t see where it’s swimming.

Great artistic craftsmanship, but...
As an art piece, this keycap looks really nice. The way the fish is suspended in the resin and the seaweed all looks very natural and convincing for such a small piece. However, in terms of actual usability I won't be using mine. Reason being is the cavity and stem on my example was molded improperly so the keycap appears crooked when I mount it. It's also a very tight fit so be don't be alarmed if it rips your entire switch out of the socket when you try to remove it. I'd recommend using this only on a board with a hot swappable PCB for that reason, just so you don't run the risk of damaging anything. Were it not for the fitment, this would easily be a five star item. It's very nice to look at but I just can't ignore the fact that it's crooked.
